আন্তন নাগ (অন্তু): সরকারের প্রচেষ্টায় জনগণের গড় আয়ু বৃদ্ধি পেলেও  ক্যান্সার ও অন্যান্য অসংক্রামক রোগীর সংখ্যা বেড়েই চলেছে।এর সুস্পষ্ট কারন হলো তামাকজাত দ্রব্যের ব্যবহার যার পিছনে রয়েছে তামাক কোম্পানির কালো হাত।
গবেষণায় ক্যান্সারের অন্যতম প্রধান কারণ হিসেবে সিগারেট, জর্দা, গুলসহ সকল প্রকার তামাকজাত দ্রব্যের ব্যবহার স্পষ্টভাবে প্রমাণিত হয়েছে । ধোঁয়াবিহীন এবং ধোঁয়াযুক্ত উভয় তামাকজাত দ্রব্যই ক্যান্সারের জন্য দায়ি।
বিড়ি-সিগারেটের ধোঁয়ায় ধূমপায়ীর সাথে সাথে অধূমপায়ী ব্যাক্তিও পরোক্ষভাবে ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ হন। বাংলাদেশে প্রতি বছর প্রায় ২৫ হাজার মানুষ পরোক্ষ ধূমপানের কারণে মৃত্যুবরণ করে থাকেন। অধূমপায়ীরা পরোক্ষভাবে ধূমপানের সংস্পর্শে আসে ফলে তাদের হৃদরোগ হওয়ার ঝুঁকি ২৫-৩০% বৃদ্ধি পায় এবং স্ট্রোকের ঝুঁকি ২০-৩০% বাড়িয়ে দেয়।
পরোক্ষ ধূমপানে সবথেকে বেশি ক্ষতিগ্রস্থ হয় বাচ্চারা। গর্ভবতী মায়েদের জন্যও এটা বেশ ক্ষতিকর।এর ফলে গর্ভের সন্তানের ক্ষতি হতে পারে ।পরোক্ষ ধূমপানের কারনে মিসক্যারেজের সম্ভাবনা বেড়ে যায়, এমনকি সন্তান জন্ম দেয়ার পরও এই প্রভাব থেকে যেতে পারে। শিশুর কম ওজন হওয়া, জন্মের সময় নানাবিধ সমস্যাসহ শিশু মৃত্যুও হতে পারে ।
তামাকের ক্ষতিকর প্রভাব থেকে জনস্বাস্থ্য রক্ষায় সরকার দেশে আইন ও সহায়ক নীতি প্রণয়নের উদ্যোগ গ্রহণ করলেও কোম্পানিগুলো প্রতিনিয়ত আইন লংঘন করে তামাক ব্যবহারে জনগনকে উৎসাহিত করে আসছে।
এছাড়াও কোম্পানিগুলো তামাক নিয়ন্ত্রণে নতুন পলিসি তৈরির ক্ষেত্রেও নানাভাবে প্রতিবন্ধকতা সৃষ্টি করছে। ফলে তামাকের ব্যবহার কাঙ্ক্ষিত হারে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করা সম্ভব হচ্ছে না বিধায় অনিয়ন্ত্রিত হারে ক্যান্সারের প্রকোপ বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে।
বিশ্ব ক্যান্সার দিবসে তামাক সেবনের ভয়াবহতাকে গুরুত্ব দিয়ে করে আজ বইমেলা প্রাঙ্গনে ডাব্লিউবিবি ট্রাস্ট ও বাংলাদেশ তামাক বিরোধী জোটের সহযোগী সংগঠনসমূহের উদ্যোগে একটি অবস্থান কর্মসূচি ও লিফলেট বিতরণ ক্যাম্পেইনের আয়োজন করা হয়।
অবস্থান কর্মসূচিতে বক্তারা বলেন, প্রত্যাশিত ফল অর্জনে যুগের সাথে সামঞ্জস্য রেখে আইন ও নীতিগুলোকে যুগোপযোগী করা প্রয়োজন হয়ে পড়লেও জনস্বাস্থ্য সুরক্ষা নীতিসহ আইন প্রণয়ন, আইন বাস্তবায়ন, সারচার্জ পলিসি প্রণয়ন, স্থানীয় সরকার প্রতিষ্ঠান গাইডলাইন প্রণয়নসহ নানা ক্ষেত্রে তামাক কোম্পানি অন্যায়ভাবে হস্তক্ষেপ করছে। গবেষণায় দেখা যায় ৯০-৯৫ শতাংশ ফুসফুস ক্যান্সার, ৮০-৯০ শতাংশ মুখগহ্বর ক্যান্সারসহ মোট ক্যান্সারের ৫০ ভাগের জন্য দায়ি তামাক । তামাক এবং বিড়ি-সিগারেটের ধোঁয়ায় উপস্থিত ৭০০০ এর বেশী ক্ষতিকর রাসায়নিক পদার্থের মধ্যে ৭০টি মানব দেহের বিভিন্ন অঙ্গপ্রত্যঙ্গের ক্যান্সার সৃষ্টিতে দায়ি। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের স্বাস্থ্য অর্থনীতি ইনস্টিটিউটের এক গবেষণায় দেখা গেছে, বিদেশে চিকিৎসার জন্য যাওয়া রোগীদের সর্বোচ্চসংখ্যক (২১%) হলেন ক্যান্সারের রোগী,এবং ১৮ শতাংশ যাচ্ছেন হৃদরোগের চিকিৎসা নিতে। যার পিছনে তামাকের ব্যবহারই প্রধান কারণ হিসেবে প্রমাণিত। উল্লেখ্য প্রতি বছর ক্যান্সারের চিকিৎসা নিতে বিদেশগামী রোগীদের মোট ব্যয় হয় ৩ দশমিক ৫ বিলিয়ন ডলার।
বক্তারা আরও বলেন, তামাকের বহুমাত্রিক ক্ষতি থেকে জনস্বাস্থ্য ও পরিবেশ রক্ষায় এবং তাদের আগ্রাসী প্রচার প্রচারণার কবল থেকে তরুণ প্রজন্মকে রক্ষায় আইনটি দ্রুত সংশোধিত হওয়া প্রয়োজন। বক্তারা অনতিবিলম্বে তামাক কোম্পানি থেকে সরকারের শেয়ার প্রত্যাহারের পাশাপাশি কোম্পানির হস্তক্ষেপ প্রতিহত করার লক্ষ্যে দ্রুত তামাক নিয়ন্ত্রণ আইনটি সংশোধন করার আহবান জানানো হয়। সকল ধরনের রাষ্ট্রীয় পুরুস্কারের তালিকা থেকে তামাক কোম্পানির নাম বাদ দেওয়াসহ তামাক নিয়ন্ত্রণ আইন বাস্তবায়নে টাস্কফোর্স কমিটির সভা নিয়মিত এবং সিদ্ধান্তসমুহ ফলোআপ করা এবং তামাক নিয়ন্ত্রণে কার্যরত সংগঠনগুলোকে সরকারের মনিটরিং কার্যক্রমের সাথে যুক্ত করার বিষয়ে দাবি জানানো হয়।  উল্লেখ্য প্রতি বছরের মতো এবছরও বইমেলা প্রাঙ্গণ শতভাগ ধূমপান ও পলিথিনমুক্ত করায় বাংলা একাডেমী কর্তৃপক্ষকে ও ঢাকা মেট্রোপলিটন পুলিশকে ধন্যবাদ জানিয়ে প্রেস বিবৃতি দিয়েছে বাংলাদেশ তামাক বিরোধী জোট।

Tobacco companies are leading people to cancer; The influence of tobacco companies should be stopped by amending the law quickly

Anton Nag (Antu): Although the average life expectancy of the people has increased due to the efforts of the government, the number of cancer and other non-communicable diseases is increasing. The obvious reason for this is the use of tobacco products, which is behind the black hands of tobacco companies. Research has clearly proven the use of all types of tobacco products including cigarettes, jorda, gul as one of the main causes of cancer. Both smokeless and smoked tobacco products are responsible for cancer. Smokers and non-smokers are indirectly affected by the smoke of bidi-cigarettes. About 25,000 people die every year in Bangladesh due to second-hand smoke. Nonsmokers exposed to secondhand smoke increase their risk of heart disease by 25-30% and stroke by 20-30%. Children are the most affected by second-hand smoke. It is also very harmful for pregnant mothers. As a result, it can harm the unborn child. The possibility of miscarriage increases due to indirect smoking, even after giving birth, this effect can remain. Low weight of the baby, various problems during birth can also cause death of the baby. To protect public health from the harmful effects of tobacco, the government has taken initiatives to formulate laws and supportive policies in the country, but the companies are constantly violating the law and encouraging people to use tobacco. Companies are also creating obstacles in the development of new tobacco control policies. As a result, it is not possible to control the use of tobacco at the desired rate due to which the incidence of cancer is increasing at an uncontrolled rate. On World Cancer Day, a stand program and leaflet distribution campaign was organized by WBB Trust and Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance's affiliate organizations today at the book fair premises to emphasize the dangers of tobacco consumption. The speakers in the position program said that although it is necessary to adapt the laws and policies in accordance with the times to achieve the expected results, the tobacco company is unfairly interfering in many areas including public health protection policies, law making, law enforcement, surcharge policy making, local government institution guideline making. Research shows that tobacco is responsible for 50% of all cancers, including 90-95% of lung cancer, 80-90% of oral cavity cancer. Out of more than 7000 harmful chemicals present in tobacco and bidi-cigarette smoke, 70 are responsible for causing cancer in various organs of the human body. According to a study by the Institute of Health Economics of Dhaka University, the highest number (21%) of patients going abroad for treatment are cancer patients, and 18% are going for heart disease treatment. Tobacco use is proven to be the main reason behind this. It should be noted that every year the total cost of patients traveling abroad for cancer treatment is 3.5 billion dollars. Speakers also said that the law needs to be amended urgently to protect public health and the environment from the multi-dimensional harm of tobacco and to protect the young generation from its aggressive advertising campaigns. Speakers called for immediate withdrawal of government shares from tobacco companies as well as an urgent amendment to the Tobacco Control Act to prevent company interference. Demands were made for regular and decisive follow-up of Task Force Committee meetings on the implementation of the Tobacco Control Act, including the removal of the names of tobacco companies from the list of all types of state awards, and the inclusion of tobacco control organizations in the government's monitoring activities. It should be noted that like every year, the Bangladesh Anti-Tobacco Alliance has issued a press statement thanking the Bangla Academy authorities and the Dhaka Metropolitan Police for making the premises of the book fair 100% smoke- and polythene-free.
